In a world that rewards us for suffocating our creative passions in favour of productivity and ‘the grind’, what can we do to help with developing creativity within ourselves?

1. Enhance your Creativity by Cutting out Distractions
Are you a mindless scroller or a binge watcher?
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying some mindless, screen time, we can easily end up smothering that part of our brain which is expressive and creative.
By focusing on our screens for engagement and enrichment, we stop listening to our creative brain that is full of ideas and passion.
2. Developing Creativity through new Surroundings
If you surround yourself with the creatively minded, especially from a variation of creative pursuits (life drawing, pottery, photography, baking, instrumental specialists, watercolourists etc) you are far more likely to light a fire of creativity underneath yourself.
Inspiration plays a huge part in the creative development experience.
3. Explore
Again, if you take yourself out of your normal surroundings, you’ll be more likely to find new inspiration for your creative pursuits. I find a good walk out into a natural, open space can be all the inspiration I need. Autumn especially triggers the creative in me!
4. Mindfulness
Sometimes having a full brain can work in your favour when you’re creating, as a sort of ‘let it out’ method. Many a work of art have been created this way! But on the flip side, sometimes a full brain can work against your creative release, because you feel too overwhelmed to flow.
Something that can help with this is the practice of meditation and mindfulness.
Deep breathing, journaling and taking yourself and your mind into a calmer space can really help to open you up so your creative juices can flow more freely.

5. Don’t Overthink, Just DO.
The ultimate. The answer. The only thing you really need to know about developing and how to nurture your creative mind is this. Don’t overthink any of it. Just DO IT.
Art and creativity is about whatever it is that is inside of YOU being released into a place or a product. it’s your soul being allowed representation.
By panicking about perfect work, we suffocate our creative soul. We stop ourselves from connecting to ourselves as artists and creators.
If you can allow yourself to make a mess, or to do it as what you think is ‘wrong’, you’ll gradually open yourself up to your fully creative self.
