Who doesn’t love Christmas decs?! Why not add a little extra magic by trying these homemade Christmas decoration ideas?
Christmas really feels like ‘the most wonderful time of the year’, and part of that magic is the array of festive decorations that appear and blanket the world.
I think that homemade decorations can really add that extra level of magic and nostalgia. I used to love that my mum and grandparents kept decorations I had made at nursery and school, and I think they still have them!
Making your own can feel just as special, so why not give these simple homemade decoration ideas a try.
Homemade Christmas Decoration Ideas
Wood Slice Decorations
These wooden slice decorations are such an easy, and eco friendly way to add a little festive cheer!
You can purchase Wooden Slices, or you could forage some branches and use a saw to get the same effect, for FREE! If you do happen to slice up your own, a drill will be required to pop a hole in each one for string to be fed through.
I use acrylic paint pens to draw festive pictures onto each slice, but you could also add glitter (eco glitter if you’re staying sustainable!) or sequins etc!
Once you’ve finished your festive drawing, leave it to dry, then feed through some string or ribbon, and use to either decorate your tree or a garland! The possibilities are endless.
Christmas Book Tree
I saw this Christmas Book Tree idea recently, and as a fully fledged member of the book addict club, it really spoke to me! Haha!
What I think is really great about this idea is that you can make it as simple or difficult as you’d like! If you have enough books, you could even replace your usual tree!
It would also be a fantastic idea to use any books bought as Christmas gifts to create a Christmas Book Tree!

Salt Dough Ornaments
Salt Dough Ornaments are another homemade Christmas decoration that you can make as simple or advanced as you feel able! With only 3 very basic ingredients for the dough (that you probably already have hanging around), these are definitely one of the easiest, homemade decorations.
The idea is to make a basic salt dough, and then use cutters/knives to create whatever shapes you fancy!
I like to (with my kids) use cookie cutters in Christmas shapes to cut out, and then a pencil to make a hole for string or ribbon. It’s important to cut this hole for string PRIOR to baking if you’re wanting to use them as hanging ornaments.
Again, we love using acrylic paint pens to add colour and pictures after baking, but normal acrylic paint and brushes would work too!
You can also varnish them after painting if you’d like, but it’s not necessary.
Homemade Wreaths
Wreaths are no longer just fresh pine, holly and mistletoe (although we obviously still adore them!), they’re now made from re-used corks, buttons, fabric, baubles and more!
With so many options available for the kind of wreath you could create, as well as new ones you could create based on what you have available laying around, why not give creating a homemade wreath a try?!
Pop to your local craft store for a base, and build from there! There are SO many ideas for wreaths!
Candy Cane Decorative Vase
Making your own decorative, candy cane vase is a sweet (pardon the pun) and reversible way to create a sprinkle of festive cheer to things you already own!
This would work with jars, vases, mugs, glasses and possibly even tins as long as they have straight sides!
You will need:
- Straight Sided Vase (or container)
- Candy Canes (Amount will vary based on size of vase/jar.container)
- Double Sided Tape
- An Elastic Band or Hair Bobble
- Ribbon (to decorate after)
How to Make Your Candy Cane Vase
- Take your container and wrap your double sided tape about half way down the outside, all the way around the container. Make sure to take off the tape protector once you’ve wrapped it around.
- Pull the elastic band/bobble around the container to either just over the tape, or just below. You want it to be near, but not ON the tape, as this will interfere with your candy cane placement.
- Insert your candy canes (flat side down, curve towards the top) between the band and the vase, stick onto the tape and use the elastic band to keep them in place while you’re working.
- Go all the way around your vase/jar until there is no space left showing. It should already be looking pretty cool at this point!
- Take your ribbon of choice, and wrap it around the middle of the now candy cane covered vase, and tie it neatly into a bow.
- You can now carefully remove your elastic band (use scissors and cut it if needs be).
- Now you have your decorative, candy cane vase!
You can use these vases and containers throughout the festive period, and could even use them for gifting things! People would then have an extra gift of a bunch of yummy, candy canes once the festive season is over.
